Blocked drains cause serious disruption and, if not fixed, bigger problems.
Slow drains might be frustrating when they're in your home, but for commercial properties, like restaurants, it could bring operations to a standstill.
The waste that can't travel down into the sewerage system can also get stuck in the drain and rot, producing an off-putting odour. Rotting material, waste and stagnant water may attract pests, like rats and insects, and provide the optimal conditions for bacteria to grow. This can make the property unsanitary and put people’s health at risk.
Should the drain be leaking water in your property, it could cause mould and mildew to grow, as well. Collapsed drains can even leak wastewater into soil and put the building’s foundations and structure at risk.
You must have a blocked drain cleared as soon as possible by professionals to keep your home or business clean and safe.
Who's responsible for a blocked drain?
Normally, when the blocked drain is inside the boundaries of your property, it's your responsibility to have it unblocked. But there are some exceptions to this.
If you live in a terraced or semi-detached house and share a drain with a neighbour, the local water authority is in charge of having the shared drain unblocked. If you live in a block of flats, the management company manage the drains within the property boundary. Should you live in a rented property, you must contact your landlord as it's up to them to have it cleared.
How do you prevent blockages?
- Comb hair before having a shower to minimise the amount of hair that goes down the drain
- Scrape plates into the bin before you wash them up or rinse them
- Avoid pouring oil and grease down your drain
- Only flush human waste and toilet paper down the toilet
- Regularly use unblocking treatments to stop obstructions building up
